Empowering Gender Inclusive Climate Action

Through training, awareness-raising, and advocacy, we hope to empower women to effectively participate in addressing the growing impacts of climate change in sectors like agriculture, health, waste management, policymaking, and natural resource management..

A large group of people are participating in a protest in front of a grand historic building. They are holding a banner that reads 'WE WILL NOT BE BYSTANDERS' and various signs with messages related to climate change and fossil fuels. The words 'LET'S CHANGE' are prominently displayed above the crowd.

Our Objective
Who We Are

Gender Climate Action Network (GCAN) Sierra Leone is a grass roots, community-based organization (CBO) formed with the belief that sustainable climate action will only be achieved if actions are inclusive, equitable, and built on the voices of all gender including women, girls and marginalized groups. With our main operational offices in Bombali and Freetown, while also registered with other district councils to extend our work to the rural districts in the country. GCAN has a pool of young Sierra Leonean professionals with a deeply rooted commitment to accelerate climate action to mitigate risks and reduce vulnerabilities. Our key focus is on addressing the gaps in gender inequality and climate impacts and solutions for indigenous and local peoples.

Our Core Values

1. Feminist Climate Justice

Gender equality is inseparable from climate justice. We center the rights, knowledge, and leadership of women and girls in all climate solutions.

2. Grassroots Power

Our work is transparent and participatory. We follow the leadership of local women and girls, ensuring our solutions are community-driven, culturally rooted, and sustainable.

3. Solidarity with Market Women & Farmers

We stand with smallholder women farmers, fisherwomen, and market traders—the backbone of food security—ensuring they shape climate policies.

4. Women’s Leadership

We invest in the next generation, empowering girls and young women with education, skills, and platforms to lead climate action.

5. Collaboration & Solidarity

We collaborate and partner with government ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), local and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs), community-based organizations (CBOs), and Learning & Research Institutions to initiate and implement ideas and projects on climate change.
